Faust I

Salzburg Festival
Since the 16th century, the Faust narrative has been part of European literature, initially as a moral warning against human hubris. Goethe transformed it fundamentally: the damned sinner becomes a restless seeker and the prototype of modern man.
Faust is less a realistic drama than a landscape of the soul. The characters embody inner forces: Mephisto represents Faust’s dark side, Gretchen his lost moral and loving nature. Goethe’s Faust thus creates an open, modern worldview in which the thirst for knowledge, longing and destruction are inextricably linked.
