Unter Tieren

Salzburg Festival
The flow of money dictates our lives – inescapable, unjust and destructive. Elfriede Jelinek follows it tirelessly as a chronicler and a voice of warning, often with greater insight than her contemporaries. In *Among Animals*, she dissects a present devoid of ideals: greed, corruption, political platitudes, wars and an unbridled financial world. Concepts such as social justice or equal opportunities now appear merely as empty shells. Jelinek gives voice to animals who speak with bitter sarcasm of a dysfunctional economic order. *Unter Tieren* is a play about our self-inflicted misfortune – and about the fact that capitalism already carries its own apocalypse within it. The Nobel Prize-winning author thus once again demonstrates her political and aesthetic radicalism. The world premiere is directed by Nicolas Stemann, with whom she has worked closely for years.
