Say it in a roundabout way

Ochs, that Ochs, wakes up in his castle. The Marschallin, that kind-hearted soul, dreams herself back to her girlhood, when she first met the Field Marshal. And him? In the thick of battle, he thinks of the Marschallin with a passionate heart… The silent film by ‘Caligari’ director Robert Wiene, based on ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ from 1926, brings quite a few surprises to the screen. We are all familiar with Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s and Richard Strauss’s most popular stage work. But the film offers exciting new perspectives; indeed, Hofmannsthal expanded the story, introducing scenes and characters that are at most merely mentioned in the opera. Join us for this unique, famous love story and its sequel, and enjoy the immortal music of Richard Strauss, presented in a tailor-made salon version that is perfectly suited to the courtly atmosphere: transparent, sometimes veiled, sometimes brutally open. For “time is a strange thing”. Yes, everything – youth and old age – has its time – and its wonderful moments.
