Goethe transformed it fundamentally: the damned sinner becomes a restless seeker and the prototype of modern man.<\/p>\n<p>Faust is less a realistic drama than a landscape of the soul. The characters embody inner forces: Mephisto represents Faust\u2019s dark side, Gretchen his lost moral and loving nature.
