Pure Adventure in the Hallein Salt Mine

Fun, adventure and mystical moments await you in this ancient realm of "White Gold". The galleries of the salt mine in the Dürrnberg near Hallein were the source of Salzburg's wealth. Visitors hop aboard the mine train for a comfortable, fun-filled ride into the center of the mountain, where two long miners' slides take them down to a subterranean salt lake, site of a new multi-media show that transports them into a magical world of light and sound. They follow in the footsteps of the Ancient Celts, who had been mining salt here since 400 B.C., and discover the mysterious world of the miners themselves who, with their bare hands, dug kilometers-long labyrinths deep into the mountain. Today's visitors, big and small, can look forward to adventure, fascinating insights and all kinds of fun during the tour. And it doesn't matter at all whether it is hot or rainy outside.

Keltenmuseum

Museum of the Celts Hallein:

Situated in the former Salina administration building, the Museum of the Celts in more than 30 rooms presents not only a richness of fine objects but also highly informative details about the Celts as well as about the salt of the Archbishops.
The main focus of the exhibition rooms on the ground and the first floor is on the objects excavated from Celtic settlements, work-places and grave-fields of the Dürrnberg, which was already inhabited by the Celts about 600 BC. Jewelry, tools, devices as well as rich-equipped grave finds show that the salt of the Dürrnberg helped the Celts to gain wealth already 2,500 years ago.

The second floor accommodates the documentation of the salt-mining on the Dürrnberg with models and tools as well as a most precise and vivid documentation of medieval salt-mining by means of 74 oil paintings, which are uniquely painted on the wall.

The Museum of the Celts is open daily, all year round.
