Learn about the Celts and the town's ancient history

The Celtic Museum in Hallein is one of the biggest museums for Celtic history in all of Europe. The combination of grave fields, areas of settlement and salt mining on the Dürrnberg is quite extraordinary for the Iron Age. The absolute highlight: A 2500 year-old beaked jug. Visitors also discover three princes' chambers (1756) and numerous objects relating to the history of Hallein. Some displays designed especially for the kids make any visit a fascinating experience for the whole family. In the former building dating back to the 17th century that once housed the salt-administration offices, you will learn more about the history of the Celts in the Tennengau, the salt trade that was dominated by the archbishops of Salzburg, and the town history of Hallein.

Sonderausstellung Wirklich_wichtig_-_Kinder_im_KeltenmuseumSpecial exhibition "Really important"

The current special exhibition "Really Important - archaeological highlights tell their story", with exhibits focused on 40 broad themes, provides insights into archaeological finds discovered within Salzburg province. The title of the exhibition clearly points to the fact that the finds, some of which date back 9,000 years - not the least of which are those unearthed in excavations on the Dürrnberg - are truly something special. Theme-related events accompanying the exhibitions are also held on a regular basis. The program for children and schools invites even the youngest visitors to experiment, participate and research.
